The Bible teaches us that its Words are like seeds. Truly, when we speak the words of the Bible, we are sowing seeds of the Word into our hearts. It is when these seeds of the Word start bearing fruit that we see transformation in our lives.
In this post, I would like to expound on this simple yet profound truth of the Bible.
Those who sow in tears
Shall reap in joy.
He who continually goes forth weeping,
Bearing seed for sowing,
Shall doubtless come again with rejoicing,
Bringing his sheaves with him. (Psalm 126:5-6)
The word that stood out in the above verse for me was doubtless. Truly, if you will sow the seeds of the word of God into your life, there is no doubt that your weeping will turn to rejoicing and your difficulties will turn to possibilities.
So lets make this practical, how do you sow and reap the Word of God? Jesus explained this truth with a parable. (Matthew 13:1-23) (Mark 4:1-20) He said: Behold, a sower went out to sow. (Matthew 13:3) Notice how it does not say: Behold a preacher went out of sow or a prophet went out to sow. The word sower used here is a very general word thereby implying that anybody can be a sower. You are responsible for sowing the Word of God into your heart.
The word of God is sown when you speak it aloud. The next thing Jesus explains is that once the Word is heard it must be understood. (Matthew 13:19) The seed you have sown cannot be reaped if you do not understand it. Truly, if you confess with your mouth 1 million times: Surely, he has borne our sickness and carried our pain (Isaiah 53:4) and have absolutely no idea what it means, you will not see the healing of God in your life. The same is true for everything else God offers you in Christ.
Jesus also said that if you do not understand the Word that you speak, Satan is able to snatch away what is sown in your heart. (Matthew 13:19) Satan cannot steal the Word from you if you understand it. That is why it is important for you to go to church and buy tapes and recording of teachers to understand what the Word really mean.
The next step for reaping what is sown in your heart is to have the Word rooted in you to such a extent that when tribulations and persecutions come because of the Word you are able to stand your ground. You can get the Word rooted in your heart the same way you do other things in life.
For example, when you were young, I am sure you remember the day your mother gave you your first buttoned-shirt. It definitely took you some weeks to get the method of buttoning a shirt rooted in your heart. Today you can button a shirt with one hand and talk on the phone with the other.
When you get something rooted in your heart you are able to do that thing sub-consciously. You do not need to be consciously thinking about it while you are doing it.
Another example could be driving a car. When you first learnt to drive, I am sure you very conscious about what speed you were at and what gear you were on. But if you are an experienced driver, you could be having a conversation with your family and changing gears without a single conscious thought throughout the journey.
The principle to be learnt here is "understanding" and "repetition" The Word of God gets rooted in your heart when you understand it, believe it and repeatedly do it.
In this life you will have tribulations and persecution but Jesus said that in Him you are an overcomer. (John 16:33) The world can throw a lot of things at you like sickness, poverty, debts, depression, divorce and the list is endless but if you understand the word, believe it and do it repeatedly you shall doubtless come out of trouble, tribulation and persecution rejoicing. (Psalm 126:6)
Another truth that Jesus taught in this parable was how the cares of this world, the deceitfulness of riches and the desire for other things choke the Word. (Mark 4:18-19) The Bible teaches us that we should not seek things in this world; rather we should seek the kingdom of God and God's righteousness first and when we do this, God adds all things that we need and want to us. (Matthew 6:25-34)
What you should analyze at this point is how much time you spend in the world as compared to the Word of God. When I began to seek God and spend hours with his Word, I was automatically left with little or no time to watch movies, TV shows, sports, play video games and listen to music. Honestly when I go out with my friends these days, I am left absolutely blank when they talk about which sports team won the game last night, a new movie, TV shows, a new song, a new actor or new actress.
But I do not feel like I have lost anything. I am rather glad that I am so in tune with God and his Word these days than I used to be before I met Jesus.
To the tell you the truth, if you want to see the Word of God transform your life you are going to have a take a decision one day to sacrifice all the things you used to do for more time with God and his Word. God will not force you into decision rather you will naturally choose Him over everything else as a response to His great Love for you.
What things were gain to me, these I have counted loss for Christ. Yet indeed I also count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as rubbish, that I may gain Christ and be found in Him, not having my own righteousness, which is from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is from God by faith; that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death, if, by any means, I may attain to the resurrection from the dead. (Philippians 3:7-11)
To sum everything up, if you want to see the Word of God bear fruit in your life, you have to speak it, understand it and accept it. (Mark 4:20) Stop and think about this for a while.
