A lot of people ask me this question: What is Sin? That is exactly what I would like to answer in this post. I do not intend to write this post with a condemning tone rather I simply hope that this post will enlighten you and lead you to God's answer for your Sin problem (Romans 10:9). Now let me jump straight to it. Sin is a state where Man is separated from God. I know my definition is quite different from what you have usually heard. What you usually hear is that SIN is a long list of things that are evil. A list that goes something like this: Disobedience to parents, destruction of the body by excessive consumption of alcohol and drugs, addictions, envy, hatred, murder, deceit, lies, evil, lust, addictions, greed, every kind of wickedness, senselessness, faithlessness, heartlessness, ruthlessness, gossips, slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogance, boastfulness, a desire to invent ways of doing evil.....
Do you see it now? Sin is a state where Man is separated from God. And it is this state that produces that long list of evil things that we in today's world call SINS. But the main issue here is not our SINS but our SIN. This state of living a life separated from God. Now God's primary concern is not what SIN produces. Do not get me wrong, all those things are evil and detestable in God's sight. But what God is really concerned about is SIN. So when God declares every man a sinner (Romans 3:23), he is really talking about how we have all lived a life independent of Him. David acknowledges this truth in his psalm of repentance after committing adultery with Bathsheba (Psalm 51:5) This has been Man's problem from the time of Adam. This is the Greatest SIN and the only SIN. When Adam ate the fruit he declared by his action that he does not want God to rule over him, he wanted to be the God of his Life and live the way he wants to live. (Genesis 3). We as Adam's children are born with same rebellious attitude. (Romans 5:12). Now stop and think about this...
The punishment of SIN is death or ETERNAL separation from God (Genesis 2:16-17). When Adam SINNED, God could have separated himself from Man eternally that very moment and he would not be wrong if he did that. We do not deserve to have a relationship with God because of what Adam did. But when Adam sinned, God did not separate himself from Man and his descendants ETERNALLY, rather he began to unveil his plan in the Garden of Eden to redeem Man from eternal condemnation in HELL. The Bible says God killed an animal and made garments of skin for Adam and Eve. (Genesis 3:21). This spoke of how God would kill Jesus Christ on the cross (Isaiah 53:10) and give his Righteousness to all who believe him. (2 Corinthians 5:21). If SIN is a state where Man is separated from God. Righteousness is a state where Man is connected back to God. Righteousness is right standing with God. And this Righteousness of God is received by faith. (Romans 3:22). This righteousness that comes by Faith is what produces Love for God and Love for your neighbor. (James 2:24). So I hope you see that God wants to fix your SIN problem. And when your SIN problem is fixed you will no longer produce fruits of SIN, like shown in the above diagram but you will begin to produce fruits of RIGHTEOUSNESS... (Romans 6:22) (1 John 3:3)
