Most prominent preachers in history knew the purpose of the 10 commandments. It is religious people who always fail to understand its purpose. The 10 commandments were given for 3 purposes and I will verify these statements with scripture as we go through the post:
- To show man that he is a sinner
- To show man that he is incapable of saving himself
- To preach and announce Christ
Romans 3:19-21
Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God.
Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.
We understand from the above verses that the Law silences every mouth and makes the whole world guilty before God. And it is by the law that we become aware of our Sin.
The Law is like a mirror. Imagine you played a game of football on a rainy day and came back home. You then, went straight to your room and looked at yourself in the mirror. You would see how dirty your clothes have become but the mirror could do no more for you. The mirror cannot clean you up. You got to go take a bath and let the water clean you up. In the same way the Law shows you how dirty you are and leads you to Christ who cleans you up.
Galatians 3:24
Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.
Now the 10 commandments was a test designed in a such a way that nobody can pass it. (James 2:10) When God said: do this and you will live, it was a challenge that God put forth before men (Deuteronomy 21:23). The very fact that God gave blood sacrifices with the 10 commandments shows us that God knew we would not be able to keep the Law and we would therefore need to be justified by faith in the blood. (Leviticus 17:11) (Romans 3:23-24) (Ephesians 1:7) (Ephesians 2:13)
For it is written:
Romans 3:21-24
But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets;
Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference:
For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:
